| Plantation |
 |
In the first phase between September 1st 09 to September 30th 09, plantation will be done in all schools which we are being supported currently. Each school will be planted with highly useful trees like basil, neem [margosa], ashoka [Saraca indica Linn.], Ficus religiosa ( Raavi tree ) and eucalyptus and Eugenia jambolana/ Syzygium cumini L (Jamun) also those yielding fruits and shade. The plantation of these trees along with explanation of their scientific, medicinal and cultural values can make children understand how important the coexisting of various life forms around us is. It also helps children to understand the impact of these plantations for the future generations.(how will they know if don't teach?).
In the second phase large scale plantation will be taken up as avenue plantation and river side and lake side plantation to increase the green cover and also to conserve the soil along the river and lake beds. This will require a greater support from the government and the sympathizers for watering the plants in case it is needed. This large scale plantation will be taken up in 2 phases as suggested by Shrii P.R.Sarkar. |

In the first phase, fast growing trees which grow to their full height in six months to two years and provide valuable green cover should be planted. Ten types of trees can be used: |
|
|
| » |
cassuarina |
| » |
sisir (Albezzia lebbeck) |
| » |
sisoo (Dalbergia) |
| » |
bakphul (Sesbania grandiflora) |
| » |
large screwpine (Pandanus andamanensium) |
| » |
drumstick (Moringa oleifera) |
| » |
red sandalwood (Santalum album) |
| » |
agave (sisal, Agave americana ) |
| » |
Diospyros discolor, and |
| » |
chamal (Eterocarpus chaplasa, Roxb.), a wild variety of jackfruit found in north east India . |
|
| |
|
In the second phase, slow growing trees like teak, which also provides green cover and can be harvested after 30 years or so, should be planted. The fast growing trees can be cut after three years, providing an additional source of income for local people. If this approach is followed, the ecological balance in the area will be restored very quickly. |
